    An Introduction for the Entrepreneur

This lecture will illustrate the current role of patents in business, including applying for a patent, using a patent as a vehicle for research and business funding, and asserting a patent offensively and defensively. Jeffrey Sears serves as an Associate General Counsel for Columbia University. He is a member of the Office of General Counsel’s Patent and Licensing Group, focusing his practice on patent portfolio management, commercialization opportunities, and post-contract compliance. Before joining Columbia, he was an associate in private practice at Foley Hoag LLP in Boston and Winston & Strawn LLP in New York. Jeff holds an S.B. in physics from MIT, an M.A. and Ph.D. in physics from SUNY Stony Brook, and a J.D. from NYU. He is admitted to practice law in Massachusetts and New York and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Jeff has actively advocated for Columbia’s position on legislative and regulatory patent matters through university and industry bodies.
